Tip Reasoning

  • Blackpool won just one of their last nine league games.
  • Middlesbrough picked up 13 of the last 15 available points.
  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten in four of their last five away games.

Blackpool’s poor form to continue

It has been a tough time for Blackpool of late after winning just one of their last nine league matches, that was against fellow promoted side and relegation-threatened Peterborough United. Here, they welcome a Middlesbrough side in terrific form under their new manager Chris Wilder.

One thing that Blackpool can say for themselves is that they picked up more points than all but Coventry when falling behind in league games this season. However, the fact that eight of Middlesbrough’s ten league wins this term were accompanied by a clean sheet may nullify that trend.

Buoyant Boro to keep the pressure on

Middlesbrough were just one of four Championship sides to fulfil their Boxing Day fixture and they did so with aplomb by brushing Forest aside 2-0. That win put them in the top-six for only the second time this season and did wonders for their confidence.

While other sides have played fewer games than Boro, points on the board and a less congested fixture list to follow can only be advantageous to Chris Wilder’s men. Now they seek to record just a second competitive win against promoted opposition at the fourth time of asking this season (W1, L3).

While Boro have already lost twice to Blackpool in league and cup this term, I predict they will buck that trend here under the new Wilder regime. Notably, 60% of Boro’s league wins this term ended 2-0 and I can see the same scoreline occurring here given the contrasting form of these sides.
