Dortmund beginning to click
Borussia Dortmund disappointed on the Champions League’s opening night two weeks ago when succumbing to a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, but their form has picked up since then as they get set to host AC Milan on Wednesday.
Since the one-sided loss in Paris in which the German’s managed a solitary shot on target, BVB have won two Bundesliga games on the bounce, seeing off Hoffenheim 3-1 on Friday evening.
The mission now is to transfer that form to the European scene and Dortmund have been fairly reliable at home at this stage of the Champions League, losing just one of the last 15 group-stage matches at the Westfalenstadion.
With Marco Reus having found his goalscoring touch, netting in Dortmund’s last three Bundesliga games, and summer signing Niclas Fullkrug opening his account in Friday’s win at Hoffenheim, there’s reason to think Edin Terzic’s side are starting to come together.
Milan’s German joy to come to an end
Milan also appear to be trending up after bouncing back from a 5-1 thrashing in the Milan derby and a frustrating goalless draw at home to Newcastle on Matchday One in the Champions League.
The Rossoneri have won three Serie A games on the bounce since then, seeing off Lazio 2-0 at the San Siro at the weekend.
Former Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic got his name on the scoresheet against Lazio and now has four goals involvements in his last seven appearances.
With Rafael Leao, Olivier Giroud and Noah Okafor all finding the net recently, Stefano Pioli’s men have the firepower to get on the scoresheet in Dortmund.
The only downside to their win at the weekend was the loss of Ruben Loftus-Cheek to injury and the England midfielder will be missed in Germany, where Milan are unbeaten on their last six visits.
They’ll do well to maintain that unbeaten record on Wednesday. Even though they made the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, Milan’s road form was far from impressive and a run of two wins in their last nine away games suggests Dortmund may edge this one.
