Borussia Monchengladbach vs Mainz Predictions
After finishing in an impressive 3rd position in the Bundesliga last season, Borussia Monchengladbach came into this season with high hopes. They only finished 3 points behind the very impressive Wolfsburg, which indicates the strength of their performance last season.
They began it with a 4-1 victory over St. Pauli in the DFP Pokal, but then had to face a Borussia Dortmund side that is under new management.
This match didn’t go as well as their domestic opener. They lost 4-0 thanks to impressive performances from Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang, Marco Reus, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
They are still in good form generally though. They have won 4 of their last 5 fixtures in all competitions, with the 4-0 loss to Dortmund being their only slip up.
But they will be hoping for better things when they host Mainz on Sunday. Mainz finished last season in 11th position after collecting 40 points last season.
Mainz began the season with an unexpected home loss to the newly promoted Ingolstadt. Despite them being new to the Bundesliga, Mainz couldn’t break down an organised Ingolstadt defence and ended up conceding themselves halfway through the second half to lose the game 1-0.
However, looking at the history between the 2 sides will boost Mainz’ optimism a bit. Both of the Bundesliga matches between them last season ended in draws, and Monchengladbach have only won 2 of their last 4 home games against Mainz.
But Monchengladbach will be determined to get some points on the board to stop the opening day defeat turning into a period of poor form.
Judging by Mainz’ performance last weekend, I would expect Borussia Monchengladbach to come out of this match with a victory under their belts. Odds of 4/6 for this outcome look very fair as well, and a 2-0 correct scoreline prediction at 7/1 look good too.
