Tip Reasoning

  • Bradford City have lost their last five home league games.
  • Newport County have won four of their last six away games in League Two.
  • Bradford City have conceded at least two goals in six of their last nine home league contests.

Exiles can ruffle Bantams’ feathers

Bradford City’s abysmal home record could continue on Friday when a robust Newport County arrive at Valley Parade looking to enhance their promotion claims.

After back-to-back away wins, Mark Hughes witnessed a third straight home league defeat under his charge when Port Vale took the points on Saturday to make it five consecutive losses for the Bantams in west Yorkshire. Two glaring problems appear to have emerged – the squad Hughes inherited is simply not good enough to carry out his instructions and the teams he has been selecting are getting bullied off the pitch.

Neither of those issues are likely to have been solved in the days between Saturday’s 2-1 defeat and the arrival of a Newport team that are as big and physical as any in the division. The Exiles’ seven-match unbeaten run was ended by Hartlepool on Friday night with manager James Rowberry later suggesting the quick turnaround from a midweek trip to Carlisle had been a factor in the below-par display.

Bradford backline has been shipping too many at home

But they have had an extra day to rest and prepare for this trip north and with an impressive run of four away wins in six we would expect much better from Newport here. The Exiles have scored two goals in their last two road trips to Carlisle and Stevenage, which encourages to back them to do so again in Bradford – where Hughes’ side have conceded at least twice in their last four home contests.

The odds are about the same for the away win and for Newport to score multiple times and both look equally likely too – with the match result recommendation preferred because the stats are more aligned to it. It does also lead us to conclude that Newport can win this 2-1 as we note that Bradford have scored exactly one goal in five of their last seven at home.
