Braga vs Rangers Predictions

  • Sporting Braga have scored at least two goals in four of their five home Europa League games in 2021-22.
  • Rangers have conceded at least two goals in both away legs against Borussia Dortmund and Red Star Belgrade.
  • Ricardo Horta has scored 19 goals in 36 league and Europa League games this season.

Revenge is in the air for buoyant Braga

The whiff of revenge will be in the air at the Quarry on Thursday when Rangers travel to Sporting Braga for a repeat of their Europa League last-16 meeting of 2020, albeit this time in the last eight.

Gers, led by Steven Gerrard, overcame their Portuguese opponents 4-2 on aggregate two years ago with the 1-0 second-leg win in Braga securing their passage in what was a deserved outcome. Braga, who are also led by a different coach now in Carlos Carvalhal, know they didn’t do themselves justice in that second leg when they had lots of the ball but didn’t really cause Rangers enough trouble.

But Carvalhal has the tactical acumen to devise a better plan and having witnessed Rangers lose the Old Firm derby on Sunday, the ex-Swansea City boss will try to get after the visitors early on. Braga are coming off one of their best results of the season – a thrilling 3-2 home win over Benfica on Saturday – and are at full strength for this.

Rangers defence can give gifts on their travels

Rangers had their confidence dented by Celtic and will again be without injured centre forward Alfredo Morelos, who has arguably been more important in this competition than he has in the Premiership this season. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have been superb in the knockout phase of the competition this year, scoring six against Dortmund and four against Red Star – but they are prone to defensive gaffes.

Braga have been at their most clinical when in front of their passionate fans and could match what both of Rangers’ two previous opponents have done – score two goals in the home leg. In five European games at the Quarry this season, Braga have hit 12 goals, so they have the form to grab a couple here.

Top scorer Ricardo Horta, who played in both legs against Rangers two years ago, is the Braga dangerman and can be a worthwhile anytime goalscorer investment here after bagging 19 goals in 36 Primeira and Europa League appearances this term. Our correct score forecast of a 2-1 home win reflects the Light Blues’ ability to score on the road – as they have done in four of their five European sojourns this season.
