Braga vs Santa Clara Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in eight of the last nine Santa Clara away league games.
  • Braga have conceded in three of their last four home Primeira Liga contests.
  • Braga have scored exactly two goals in five of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Santa Clara seek revenge for Portuguese cup punishment

Santa Clara will be out for revenge on Monday night when they travel to the former Minho province to take on Sporting Braga. The Azoreans were put to the sword on their last visit to The Quarry when Carlos Carvalhal’s men spanked them 6-0.

Santa Clara had taken one point from their first four away trips back then in November and were clearly still reeling from the resignation of coach Daniel Ramos, but his replacement Mario Silva has more than steadied the ship. Victory over champions Sporting in January was the start of a four-game unbeaten run that moved them into the top half of the table, although away results still largely elude them.

But the westernmost top-flight club in Europe have maintained a habit of scoring on the road with the 2-1 defeat at the Luz earlier this month marking the ninth straight away game in which they had found the net.

Hosts still prone to defensive blunders

Braga overturned their 2-0 first-leg deficit to make it through to the last-16 of the Europa League on Thursday night after a penalty shoot-out. Os Arsenalistas could be forgiven for focusing on Europe right now as they have little chance of catching the top three and probably only Gil Vicente look capable of denying them fourth place.

Braga will be without suspended midfielder Andre Horta for this game with Andre Castro his likely deputy for this one, although Carvalhal may feel the need to shuffle his pack further. The hosts can play some pretty and incisive football – as they did against Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday – but can still be prone to defensive blunders.

Braga have kept one clean sheet at home in their last four league games and they might have struggled to keep Sheriff at bay if the visitors hadn’t turned up with the wrong tactics for the occasion. That’s why we are taking both teams to score as the main bet here and recommending a 2-1 home win in correct score markets. Braga prevailed 2-1 over Pacos Ferreira – who are one place and one point behind Santa Clara in the table – earlier this month, so this game could follow suit.
