Tip Reasoning

  • West Brom have taken seven points from a possible nine since Steve Bruce switched to a 3-5-2 formation.
  • Bristol City have lost four of their last five league games, including their last two at Ashton Gate.

Rejuvenated Throstles can raid Robins’ nest

Inconsistent Bristol City’s could be set for a third home defeat on the trot when a West Brom side who have rediscovered themselves under Steve Bruce arrive at Ashton Gate this weekend.

The Robins lost for a fourth time in their last five outings when slack defending from two Barnsley corners cost them on Tuesday night. Nigel Pearson has warned his players they are playing for their futures over the remainder if a season which has never really gained any forward momentum.

The Baggies have fund some now though after their midweek home win over leaders Fulham made it seven points from a possible nine since Bruce switched to a 3-5-2 formation. The Albion boss has found the right balance and chemistry in midfield while his strikeforce of Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson have both ended goal droughts.

Fulham win was no fluke

WBA had hit the post and had cast-iron penalty claims denied in a first half in which they overran Fulham, so it was no fluke result to overcome the title favourites. They will travel to Bristol with a feeling that they can yet overtake a number of their rivals to clinch a playoff spot that had looked to be gone two weeks ago.

Two clean sheets in the last three games could also indicate a tightening of West Brom’s defence. But Bristol City have scored in 13 straight home league games, including against some of the better defensive sides in the league, so we will shy away from a win to nil here.

A correct score play of 2-1 to the visitors looks like the best fit for this clash given both teams to score has landed in 11 of the last 13 City homes and Pearson’s men have only failed to score in three of their last 22 league contests. But the Baggies have the momentum and firepower to get the job done.
