Bristol Rovers vs Oldham Predictions
Bristol Rovers pretty much kissed their play-off bid goodbye when losing to a struggling Gillingham team last time out and there is now little left to play for as far as they’re concerned. The play-offs are not mathematically out of reach, but they’ve got virtually no hope of overturning a seven point gap, especially with Millwall and Southend looking in good shape.
Oldham are also a team with little left to play for after beating Bolton on Saturday afternoon. That result really was massive for John Sheridan’s men, as it means there are now six points between them and the drop-zone. From this point, it’s unlikely that Oldham will be heading down.
Considering neither of these two have all that much to play for, coupled with the fact that Oldham are about as defensive as it gets, the bet that stands out is ‘Under 2.5 Goals.
Bristol Rovers haven’t been great anyway in recent weeks, but now that they’re faced with the very realistic prospect of not going up, they could reign it in a bit as far as their attacking efforts go. On top of this, although form at home has been respectable over the last month or so, the goals haven’t exactly been going in at a rapid rate, with five of their last six at home seeing less than three goals hit the net. Against an Oldham side whose main objective is usually containment, it’s not hard to see another relatively low-scoring match materialise here.
Preventing goals, as opposed to scoring them, has been the theme of the season for Oldham and so, unsurprisingly, they’ve tended to be involved in plenty of low-scoring matches. ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in Just 21% of their league matches, as well as in only 24% of their away games. What’s more, the visitors know that a point would guarantee their safety and so they’re expected to come and be as cautious as ever.
With the situation these two find themselves in, combined with recent form and, in particular, Oldham’s style of play, a lack of goals is fancied at Memorial Stadium on Easter Monday.
