Railwaymen on track for easy passage

CFR Cluj go into Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League qualifying tie first leg as big favourites against a relatively inexperienced Borac Banja Luka side.

The Red-Blues were crowned champions of Bosnia and Herzegovina for just the third time last season and this is only their second crack at Champions League qualifiers.

Unfortunately, they arrived in Romania without several key players due to injury and several of those are in defence.

Coach Dejan Uzelac has problems at centre-back where vice-captain Marko Jovanovic is unavailable, leaving him only two fit options in Dorde Cosic and Dorde Milojevic.

Captain Stojan Vranjes is doubtful because of knee problems while striker Panagiotis Moraitis is also suffering from abdominal pain, although he could play through it on Tuesday.

First-choice goalkeeper Bojan Pavlovic, however, will not be able to play due to injury.

CFR have been busy preparing for this at an Austrian training camp where their results in friendly matches have been OK, but the performances were better.

Marius Sumudica is known to be a players’ coach but he swiftly dealt with some disrespect from Venezuelan forward Mario Rondon by getting him out of the club within 24 hours.

The Railwaymen strengthened earlier this summer with the signings of Lithuanian goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis and ex-Guingamp midfielder Guessouma Fofana.

Cluj, therefore, appear to be on the right track to the next round at the very least and we can’t see the visitors derailing them here at all. A 2-0 margin of victory looks on the cards against an injury-depleted Borac Banja Luka side.
