Chaves vs Feirense Predictions
Just three points separate bottom of the Primeira Liga Chaves and second bottom Feirense ahead of their clash on Thursday, in what can only be described as a relegation six-pointer. Chaves are currently four points from safety and really need the win or they risk being cut adrift at the bottom of the table, while victory for their guests could lift Feirense as high as thirteenth if results elsewhere go in their favour.
Chaves ended a run of five straight defeats when they beat second tier opponents Varzim 3-1 in the Taca da Liga, but still saw the hosts finish second in Group C behind Porto on goals scored. Niltinho broke the deadlock in the thirty-fourth minute, but Varzim responded three minutes later with an equaliser from Ruster which saw the sides go in level at the break. This match wasn’t blessed with good football or a plethora of goal scoring opportunities, but Chaves were able to score twice in the second half through William and Teixeira to wrap up the three points.
Feirense sat top of Group D heading into the final round of fixtures where they played host to Sporting CP. Goals from Raphinha and Fernandes saw the visitors take a 2-0 lead, but Tiago Silva converted a penalty for Feirense to make it 2-1 heading into the interval. A penalty for the visitors was converted on the hour mark by Dutch striker Dost and soon after Sporting wrapped up the three points, and first place in the group, thanks to an own goal from Luís Machado. Feirense ended up slipping from first to third on the final day, with goal difference separating the top three teams in the final Group D standings.
Chaves and Feirense locked horns for a pre-season friendly this year which ended goalless, but their last competitive match-up back in February produced three goals and saw Chaves pick up all three points. William put the visitors in front in the twenty-fourth minute, but a goal from Luís Rocha shortly after the half hour mark ensured the teams went in level at the break. Matheus Pereira scored the only goal of the second forty-five three minutes from time to hand Chaves all three points. The visitors finished sixth last season, while Feirense only just missed out on relegation by one point and one position in the Primeira Liga table.
Neither side can claim to be in decent form, but just one win, one draw, and four defeats from their last six matches in all competitions is enough to see Feirense head into the game as the slight form favourites. Chaves have also managed one win during that period, but each of their other five games have all been defeats. Ghazaryan top scores for Chaves this season with three goals, while Edinho also have three Primeira Liga strikes and leads the way in front of goal for Feirense.
We’re confident that under 2.5 goals will be scored in Thursday’s match, and have backed Chaves to claim a 1-0 win in what should be a tight and tense game. Four of the last six meetings between the two clubs have produced under 2.5 goals, while four of Chaves’ and three of Feirense’s last six matches have also witnessed under 2.5 goals scored. Feirense have failed to score in three of their last six matches, and we’re expecting more of the same from the misfiring visitors on Thursday.
