After only picking up 1 point from their opening 2 Premier League games, Chelsea finally managed to grab a win last weekend against West Brom.
It was by no means a straight forward victory. West Brom held their own after going 2-0 down and missing a penalty and pulled one back twice to end the match 3-2. John Terry was sent off after struggling to keep pace with Salomon Rondon, and the Chelsea defence generally looked fragmented and old.
But a win is a win, and the Chelsea fans will be pleased with the performance of new signing Pedro. He grabbed a goal early on in his debut and then set up Diego Costa for Chelsea’s second of the game.
But it was against West Brom, a side who haven’t looked particularly good in the early stages of the season. Crystal Palace are looking like a solid mid-table side, and we expect them to give Chelsea more of a run for their money.
They won last weekend against Aston Villa, and the weekend before had put up a very good fight at home to Arsenal only to come away with nothing.
Even so, a 6 point return from their opening 3 games puts them in good stead from the very start, and Alan Pardew will be hoping to distance himself from the relegation zone before pushing on for a good finishing position.
Chelsea certainly have the upper hand if we’re going on past meetings between the sides. They have won all of the last 6 games, but the last 5 have been much closer than you would expect. Chelsea haven’t won by more than a single goal since their 4-1 victory in 2005.
Given their poor start to the season, I can’t see them hammering Palace on Saturday either. I would expect another close match, and odds of 1.850 for a Crystal Palace +1.5 Asian Handicap Win are incredibly good value.
