In-form Pompey can profit against bottom club

Portsmouth have won five of their last six matches in League Two, netting 18 goals across that quartet of games to reignite their faltering play-off hopes, after enduring a six-match winless run after Christmas. Danny Cowley’s men are now seven points off the play-offs with a game in hand, as they chase a first return to the second tier since 2012.

Having beaten Crewe 2-0 once already this season, the visitors should travel to the Railwaymen in confident mood on Tuesday. As well as being in fine recent form, Portsmouth boast the third tier’s fifth-best defensive record, and only two teams have conceded fewer than the 17 away goals shipped by Cowley’s men.

Crewe, on the other hand, are hurtling towards League Two, sitting bottom of the league and eight points from safety after losing eight of their last nine. David Artell’s men have scored just twice in their last five home matches, losing four and losing by more than a one-goal margin on three occasions.

Considering the contrasting form in which these two outfits approach Tuesday’s clash, as well as taking into account Portsmouth’s early-season win over the Railwaymen, only one result looks likely at Gresty Road.
