Golden opportunity for rare Serbs success
It’s been four years since Crvena Zvezda last won a Champions League group stage game and a visit from Young Boys side looks a good chance to end that run.
The Serbian champions gave a decent account of themselves at Manchester City on matchday one, taking the lead before the reigning champions came back to win the game 3-1.
But that loss was Crvena Zvezda’s third in their last five games during what’s been a sloppy start to the defence of their title.
What has at least been consistent is their goal output, bagging at least twice in six of their eight competitive games, and their form at home.
They remain a tough opponent at the Stadion Rajko Mitic, where they are currently unbeaten in 21 games, while they’ve only ever lost five of 32 Champions League home games at the Belgrade venue.
Crvena Zvezda have won one home group stage match in each of their last two Champions League campaigns and with Man City and RB Leipzig still to visit, this represents their best chance for a win.
Young Boys out to make history
Swiss champions Young Boys have never won an away game in the group stage of the Champions League with their best result being a 1-1 draw at Manchester United two seasons ago.
They head to Serbia having been well beaten by RB Leipzig 3-1 at home in their first game, one of two defeats they’ve suffered in their last five European and league games.
The Bern-based side picked up a 1-0 win at Grasshoppers at the weekend with Cedric Itten scoring the winner and in the Swiss striker and Jean-Pierre Nsame, they have two forwards capable of hurting Crvena Zvezda if given a chance.
Crvena Zvezda rarely concede at home in domestic games but Champions League matches tend to be a different story and there’s a good chance both teams take a positive approach for what they’ll view as a winnable fixture.
Home advantage has counted for a lot when it comes to Crvena Zvezda’s game and they should see off Young Boys in an entertaining clash.
