Out-of-form sides face off

Neither Empoli nor Udinese can claim to approach Saturday’s mid-table matchup in anything resembling decent form – while Paolo Zanetti’s hosts have failed to win in their last six games, the Zebrette have done likewise, winning just one of their last 18. Though a great deal of quality may not be expected when they square off, two poor defensive records suggest goals just might be.

Empoli’s 2-1 defeat at Monza made it three losses and three draws from their last six games – a run which follows on from an impressive spell around Serie A’s January resumption, in which they beat Inter Milan. Zanetti’s team have not kept a clean sheet since that victory, however, shipping multiple goals in five of their last six. Only a passable attacking record has helped them pick up points in that time – four of their last six contests have contained goals at both ends.

Udinese have also seen both teams score in four of their last six, with Andrea Sottil’s men showing few signs of turning around their awful run. The Zebrette have won just once since beating Verona on October 3 – a span which includes a 1-1 draw at home to Empoli – and have managed just three clean sheets in their last 17. As well as last week’s slightly fortunate stalemate with Atalanta, only Sampdoria and Cremonese – Serie A’s two worst attacking outfits – have failed to net against them.

With neither side looking attractive to punters following their dismal runs of form, backing both teams to net – or perhaps more accurately, two poor defences to concede – is our main tip.

Meanwhile, a repeat of January’s 1-1 draw between the teams represents a solid correct score prediction – Empoli (10) and Udinese (11) are the only teams in double figures for Serie A draws this term.
