England Women vs Denmark Women Predictions
- Both teams have only scored in one of Denmark’s last eight matches
- Both teams to score landed in just one of their first 18 games at this World Cup
- There were seven 1-0 wins in the first 18 matches of the World Cup
Improvement needed from both teams
England got their Women’s World Cup campaign off to a somewhat underwhelming start with a 1-0 win over Haiti thanks to a Georgia Stanway penalty.
The Lionesses have now failed to score from open play in their last four matches and will be hoping something can click going forward in Friday’s clash with Denmark.
The Danes were also a touch fortunate to win their opener, netting a late winner to get the better of a Chinese side who could have taken something from the clash with better finishing.
Both of these teams will know that they’ll need to improve their performances in this clash, with bigger challenges on the horizon.
Given their victories in the opening round of fixtures, the pair have put themselves in a decent position to progress from the section but will want to secure top spot and avoid a potential clash with hosts Australia in the round of 16.
Close game expected
England looked rusty at times against Haiti, and it must be remembered that this is a vastly different team to the one that lifted the European Championships last summer, veterans such as Ellen White and Jill Scott have retired while Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby are injured.
The WSL season also ended in May so players will take some time to get up to the pace of competitive football after a long break.
Mary Earps showed why she is crucial to this Lionesses side with a pair of important saves against Haiti and she is fancied for another clean sheet against a Danish side that did not show much against China.
Narrow wins have been the prevailing theme of the early encounters in this year’s World Cup and England could be on the right end of one here.
Narrow win for England
Despite some of their issues going forward, Sarina Wiegman’s team have recorded three clean sheets in a row and they are fancied to win this one to nil.
Both teams to score has only landed in one of the Danes’ last eight games, and they did not show enough going forward in their opener to suggest they will be able to cause sufficient issues for Millie Bright and co in England’s defence.
There have already been seven 1-0 wins in this year’s tournament and a repeat of that scoreline is not out of the question in what may be a low-scoring affair.
