England Women vs Sweden Women Predictions
- England had won nine consecutive games before their extra-time win over Spain in the quarter-finals.
- The Lionesses have conceded just four goals in 18 games under Sarina Wiegman, and kept four clean sheets in their last five outings.
- Sweden have won just two of their last eight meetings with teams in the top 10 of FIFA’s world rankings since beating England at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
In-form England targeting Wembley dream
Georgia Stanway’s extra-time stunner saw England produce a remarkable comeback victory over fellow heavy-hitters Spain in the Euro 2022 quarter-finals, putting Sarina Wiegman’s team just one win away from matching the class of 2009’s feat of reaching a European Championship final. Sweden, Olympic silver medallists last year and ranked second in the world by FIFA, will provide another tough test for the Lionesses, but the hosts should be confident of another huge win in Sheffield.
When including the extra-time triumph over La Roja, England have won 10 consecutive games, while their concession at Brighton’s AMEX stadium last time out was just their fourth in 18 matches under Sarina Wiegman. Their recent winning run has included four victories over elite opponents in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain, and their extra two days of rest could be huge after their exertions last time out.
Sweden, meanwhile, needed a 92nd-minute winner to beat a stubborn Belgian team last time out, having mustered an incredible 33 attempts on goal as they dominated proceedings in Leigh. Sweden could certainly threaten England’s hopes – and have only lost one of the teams’ seven competitive meetings – but have not been entirely free-flowing this summer. Meanwhile, since beating England at the 2019 World Cup, Sweden have won just two of their eight games against the world’s top 10 sides.
Lionesses can roar into final
Given England’s terrific recent form, the home advantage afforded to them at what should be a raucous Brammall Lane, and their extra two days of preparation, backing them to take another step towards a historic triumph looks prudent.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s struggles to break down Belgium last time out do not bode well for a clash with one of the Women’s games strongest rearguards, and a 1-0 win for the Lionesses looks a strong correct score play.
