Estoril +2

Reason for tip

Estoril have beaten Porto twice already this season and have not lost by more than a goal at home in the Dragons’ last three league visits. They are catching Porto during an indifferent run of away league form and have just as much, if not more, to play for as they battle relegation. Nine of Porto’s 13 away opponents this season would have won with a +2 handicap.

FC Porto 2-1

Reason for tip

Porto have failed to win four of their last six away league fixtures, including against a Gil Vicente side only three points better off than Estoril. The Canaries are not enjoying their best run at home, but they have troubled Porto twice already this season and can do so again in a narrow 2-1 loss. Porto have scored no more than two goals in 10 of their 13 away league games this term and kept only four away clean sheets.

Porto must be careful of history repeating

If history repeats itself in Estoril, Porto’s title challenge will hit the rocks again this weekend. The Canaries have beaten the Dragons twice already this season and will look for an unlikely hat-trick when they host Sergio Conceicao’s side on Saturday night.

Estoril are fighting to stay up and enter this game only two places and two points ahead of Portimonense in the relegation play-off position. A 1-0 victory over the Algarve outfit put them into that position and they will be desperate to stay out of the bottom three.

Porto’s title prospects still look like long shot with Benfica six points clear of them in second place and Sporting Club a further point ahead at the summit. With eight games to go, it looks like being too much of a gap to bridge for Porto, who will soon turn their focus back to the cup.

Hosts can be backed on the handicap

All of Conceicao’s international contingent returned to the club unscathed after representing their countries, leaving the coach with a full squad to select from bar defenders Marcano and Zaidu Sanusi, who have been out for a while. But even his strongest lineups have struggled against Estoril and their five-man defensive line this season, going down 1-0 at the Dragao in November and losing an away league cup meeting a month later.

Porto did gain some revenge by beating Estoril 4-0 in the cup in early January, but Vasco Seabra rested several key players for that game and Conceicao played a full-strength line-up.

The Dragons have not beaten Estoril by more than a goal in their any of their last thre league visits and, after a chequered recent patch of away form, it may be profitable to oppose Porto in the handicap markets by taking Estoril +2.
