FC Volendam Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Excelsior have failed to win any of their last five Eredivisie home games while Volendam have avoided defeat in five of their last six away league contests. Excelsior have won only one of their last 22 league games in total and there appears to be an issue over their ability to fight in games.

FC Volendam 2-1

Reason for tip

Volendam are scoring goals and can get a couple against an Excelsior defence that has shipped multiple goals in nine of their last 10 league games. But the visitors have not kept an away clean sheet all season and have conceded exactly one in four of their last five road trips.

Excelsior look edgy after dressing room eruption

Excelsior appear vulnerable to Volendam in Friday night’s crucial relegation six-pointer at the wrong end of the Eredivisie. The Rotterdam club begin the game three points clear of the visitors, who sit in the bottom two.

But Marinus Dijkhuizen’s side are drifting in the direction of the relegation places after winning just one of their last 22 games. Their five-month period of decline all appeared to come to a head last weekend when they lost 2-1 to PEC Zwolle and saw Volendam close the gap with their 3-2 win at RKC.

Goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel, defender Redouan El Yaakoubi and midfielder Lance Duijvestijn all admitted team spirit was not right as Excelsior showed a lack of fight in going down to their ninth defeat in 10 games.

Volendam’s team spirit is evident

Whether the anger felt in the dressing room afterwards translates into a reaction for the visit of Volendam remains to be seen, but it still might not be able to earn the hosts victory against a side unused to losing on the road.

Het Nieuwe Oranje have lost just one of their last six road trips and their only taste of defeat at the ground of a team currently below 10th place was at RKC in October. They have come from behind to take points in each of their last two away games and found a late winner even after RKC had pulled back onto level terms with two goals in the space of five minutes last weekend.

Team spirit does not look to be lacking in the Volendam dressing room right now and that makes them a great play to avoid defeat at Van Donge & De Roo Stadion.
