Top-of-the-table clash in Turkey
Fenerbahce and Galatasaray look hard to separate on paper as the Istanbul rivals head into Saturday’s Super Lig derby clash in first and second spot at the top of the table.
Galatasaray are two points ahead of Fener after winning all five of their league games so far, although they did suffer a blow in the Champions League qualifying rounds when going out to Young Boys.
Okan Buruk’s side raced into a 2-0 advantage against Gaziantep in midweek before throttling down in readiness for this derby while Fenerbahce’s last match was a routine 2-0 win at Kasimpasa last weekend.
Both teams tend to score on big nights for these rivals
There is little to be gained form looking at the form coming into this clash as these contests are usually decided by which team is set up best and who keeps their head on the night. That has been Galatasaray on three of the last five occasions with Fener’s only win in this fixture since 2022 coming last May when they managed to do it with 10 men for the most part.
Jose Mourinho is now in charge, so there will be no shortage of cynicism on display from the hosts while Galatasaray will be looking to secure at least a draw to stay at the top of the standings.
A 1-1 draw could be the eventual outcome as both sides have shown a propensity to both score and concede in the big games. All four of Fenerbahce’s Champions League qualifiers saw goals at both ends, as did Galatasaray’s first leg at Young Boys., which featured five goals.
