Venezia in worrying form as relegation battle hots up

Paolo Zanetti’s Venezia are tumbling towards relegation as the Serie A season reaches its climax, with only the poor form of their rivals keeping them in with a chance of survival. A run of six consecutive losses has plunged them to 19^th, and with the likes of Atalanta, Juventus, and Roma all still to play, they may have to go for it against Fiorentina on Saturday.

Going for it, however, is not something Zanetti’s men are known for, scoring just 26 times in 31 league games and averaging fewer shots per game (9.52) than any other Serie A side. Venezia have also shipped two or more goals in four of their last six games, and haven’t kept a clean sheet since a 0-0 draw with Genoa on Halloween.

A trip to Fiorentina, then, comes at the worst possible moment, with La Viola high in confidence after winning three of their last four and going unbeaten in five games. Vincenzo Italiano’s men beat Napoli last week to reassert their European credentials, and 33 goals in 15 home matches this term, a tally beaten only by Inter and Lazio, suggests Venezia may struggle again.

Given Venezia’s poor attacking record, it didn’t require much for three of their last six opponents to beat the -1 handicap, which Fiorentina have done five times on home soil this season.

For those reasons, we’re tipping Fiorentina to win by more than a one-goal margin on Saturday, while a 2-0 triumph could represent decent correct score value after Italiano’s men kept back-to-back home clean sheets.
