Fleetwood Town vs AFC Wimbledon Predictions

An away game at Peterborough looked a reasonably tough first task, though Joey Barton’s Fleetwood made it look rather ordinary, as they ran out 3-1 winners. After an encouraging display, the Cod Army will be looking for another three points. Wimbledon are looking to bounce back after a late goal saw them lose in front of a home crowd on the opening weekend.

If we strip back the result, then it’s not exactly unfair to say that Fleetwood’s 3-1 victory was somewhat fortunate, as they ended the game against Peterborough with an expected goal difference of -0.06, which essentially tells us that based on the quality of chances created, neither side should’ve outscored the other. However, it was the Cod Army who were by far the more clinical, as they took full of advantage of some half-chances.

Going forward, by posting just 0.67 expected goals for, Fleetwood weren’t at all overly creative, but as they shipped only 0.73, giving up just three shots on target, they were solid. If they can maintain such defensive levels on the road and add extra attacking quality at home, then a top-six finish will certainly be within the grasp of Joey Barton’s men this term.

Unlike the Trawlermen, AFC Wimbledon came unstuck on match-day one, losing by two goals to one against promotion hopefuls Rotherham. They were level until just six minutes from the end, though they wouldn’t exactly have been good value for a share of the spoils. As they ended the game with an expected goal difference of -1.22, having created only 0.54 expected goals for, the Dons deserved to lose by a goal.

Losing against the Millers was disappointing, but there is no reason for Wally Downes’ men to worry, as they weren’t overly easy to break down, while they’ll certainly get easier tasks than taking on a side that is likely to be right up there come the end of the campaign.

The betting ahead of this match suggests that Fleetwood should make light work of doubling their points tally, though it feels like their away-day success first time out is carrying more weight than it probably should. Make no mistake about it, Barton’s men were solid last week, but they weren’t overly impressive going forward, so it’s not at all difficult to envisage the Dons, who’ll rarely roll over under Downes, making life tough for the hosts on Saturday.

At the prices, ‘Wimbledon +1 Handicap’ is tough to avoid. Fleetwood created marginally more than Wimbledon last week, which doesn’t exactly bode well, especially since Rotherham are generally considered a better side than Peterborough. The way in which Wimbledon resisted for long periods against a powerful, creative Millers side suggests that Saturday’s visitors can frustrate Barton’s men. Moreover, the respective opening-day performances of both point towards the hosts being slightly too short and thus supporting Wimbledon to pick up their first points of the campaign offers punters some value.
