Tip Reasoning

  • Mainz have drawn two of their last three home Bundesliga games.
  • Hertha Berlin have drawn three of their last five Bundesliga contests.
  • Both teams have scored in four of the last five head-to-head meetings and the last time they met in may it ended 1-1.

Mainz and Hertha to share the spoils

Two clubs that finished in the lower half of the Bundesliga last season meet in Mainz on Tuesday when hosts FSV look to put further distance between them and struggling Hertha.

Bo Svensson has done a terrific job to turn things around since being drafted in last January, winning 16 and drawing 10 of his 37 games in charge. That was more than enough to stave off relegation last season and Mainz are now comfortable in eighth place level on points with bigger-budget RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt this term.

As an attacking force, they are much better and Jonathan Burkhardt is making a name for himself with seven goals already. But they are nowhere near the finished article at the back, having kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 league and cup outings.

All Hertha’s away defeats have come to top-end clubs

Hertha are wildly inconsistent on the road with good wins at mid-table Bochum and Eintracht interspersed with heavy defeats at Bayern Munich and Leipzig. All four of their away defeats this term have come against clubs above Mainz in the top seven, so they may be able to get something from this trip to MEWA Arena.

The draw looks favourable in the match result betting because, although Mainz have won 50% of their home Bundesliga games, only two of those have been since August when the clean sheets began to dry up.

Both teams have scored in four of the last five head-to-head meetings and we believe the same will happen here, given Hertha have been blanked only once in their last five league games. The last time these two met in May it ended 1-1 and that looks a very likely result again with 40% of both sides’ last five results having been exactly that scoreline.
