Reason For Mainz vs Hertha Berlin Predictions

Mainz kicked off their 2019/20 campaign in the worst possible way, losing all three of their opening games against Freiburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich. Add to that the humiliating DFB Pokal first-round exit to third-tier Kaiserslautern and it’s obvious that 05ers boss Sandro Schwarz has had some thinking to do over the international break.

Having scored just two goals so far this season – the joint lowest total in the Bundesliga – it’s also fair to say that the absence of injured striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored a club-high 14 Bundesliga goals, has been felt. Hungarian striker Adam Szalai has been re-signed from Hoffenheim to help share the load carried by forwards Robin Quaison and Karim Onisiwo, who scored 14 between them last term.

Things started much better for Hertha Berlin, who drew 2-2 away to Bayern Munich in their opener. However, after three matches, only their opponents this weekend have fared worse than them so far. Defeats to nil against Wolfsburg and Schalke will have left Ante Covic scratching his head as they remain just one of four sides still searching for a league win going into the fourth game.

Change to the attack is much needed as Hertha go into this as the Bundesliga side with the fewest shots on goal so far this season. Signing winger Marius Wolf from Borussia Dortmund on deadline day should help their cause somewhat. He’s expected to slot straight into the starting XI, possibly at the expense of Salomon Kalou, who was far from impressive last time out.

Whether this will be enough to make a difference is yet to be seen. At first glance, this doesn’t really have the potential to be a particularly high-scoring clash. Neither side has been that impressive going forward over their opening three matches – in fact, Hertha and Mainz are the joint lowest scoring sides in the Bundesliga – and four of the last five matches between them have seen ‘under 2.5 goals’ land too.

Notably, no team has conceded more goals this season so far than Mainz, though half of these came in a 6-1 thrashing away to giants Bayern Munich. After seeing Hertha’s attacking stats and failure to score in back-to-back games, it would be fair to say that they have very little chance of exploiting Mainz’s defence in the same way. For us, this leans things in the hosts’ favour.

Mainz are unbeaten in each of their last four home games against Hertha (W2 D2) and, interestingly, they haven’t conceded in any of these either. With Hertha so out of shape, you have to like the price on that to continue, and given that Mainz have scored at least one goal in 13 of their last 14 games at the Opel Arena, we feel they’ll be the side to clinch the points once again here. Our prediction: 1-0 Mainz.
