Gillingham vs Cardiff Predictions
Gillingham sit two points above the drop zone in League One, losing their last two matches, and on Saturday face Premier League opposition in the form of Cardiff City in the FA Cup. The Bluebirds aim this season is simply to avoid relegation, and as things stand Warnock’s men are achieving their goals as they sit two places three points above third from bottom Burnley. Both clubs suffered defeat in the league last time out and will be looking to the FA Cup as a possible change of scenery in which they can pick up some confidence and more importantly a win.
A fortieth minute strike from Mantom proved enough for Southend to take a 1-0 lead into the interval at home to Gillingham on New Years Day. The match itself was very closely fought and either team could have won the game come the final whistle. However, despite having forward Robinson sent-off in stoppage time Southend managed to score against through Moore to wrap up a 2-0 win. Gillingham will be very disappointed with the result after having 53% of the overall possession, more corners, and sixteen shots during the ninety minutes, but have to take some of the blame for what can only be described as wayward finishing.
Tottenham Hotspur recovered well from their shock 3-1 defeat at home to Wolves to claim all three points in Cardiff. Harry Kane opened the scoring in the third minute and in doing so became the first Premier League player to score at least once against every club he had faced (28 out of 28) in the top flight of English football. Danish midfielder Eriksen doubled the visitors lead in the twelfth minute and Son ended any faint hopes of a Cardiff City comeback with a third goal shortly before the half hour mark. Cardiff had just 30% of the overall possession, but will be disappointed not to have made more of their three shots on target.
Both of these clubs were plying their trade in the Championship when they last locked horns back in 2005. The game finished 1-1 in Gillingham that day and Cardiff went on to claim a mid table finish that season, while the Gills were relegated to League One. There is nothing to separate the two clubs in the form guide with each picking up two wins, one draw, and three defeats from their last six matches. With fourteen goals in the league so far this season the Cardiff City defence needs to watch out for Gillingham striker Eaves as he has proved his quality in front of goal. Paterson top scores in the league for Cardiff, but the Bluebirds are yet to see the best from their strikers who have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight.
We’re confident that both teams will score and over 2.5 goals will be produced when Gillingham host Cardiff on Saturday, and have backed the Premier League side to run out 3-1 winners. Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings between these two clubs, and over 2.5 goals have been also scored in five of the last six encounters. Both teams have scored and over 2.5 goals were produced in two of Gillingham’s and two of Cardiff’s last five matches, and we’re expecting more of the same between the pair in Saturday’s FA Cup tie.
