Grasshopper vs Sion Predictions

Grasshopper and Sion both progressed through to the next round of the Schweizer Pokal last weekend, but this Saturday sees the return of the Super League and another chance for the hosts to pick up their first three points of the season. Sion sit fifth after a mixed start to the campaign that has produced two wins and two defeats in the visitors opening four matches of the new season.

Grasshopper only just escaped relegation last season and their start to the new Super League season suggests the twenty-seven time champions are set for another basement battle this time around as well.

Saturday’s hosts lost their opening three games of the season, but did come up against both Young Boys and Basel during that period. Their fourth match of the campaign brought about their first points thanks to a late second half comeback that rescued a point away at Lugano.

A thirty-fifth minute penalty from Ceesay saw Grasshopper behind at the break in their last league game, and when the same player added a second shortly before the hour mark the visiting fans must have feared a fourth straight defeat was on the cards.

However, Brazilian defender Nathan scored on his debut for Grasshopper in the seventy-fifth minute to half the deficit and substitute Cvetković completed the comeback in dramatic style with a ninety-fifth minute equaliser.

Saturday’s hosts remain bottom of the table despite that draw and have a goal difference of -6 with just four games played. Their opponents Sion, on the other hand, have a +3 goal difference despite losing two and winning two of their opening four matches.

Title challengers Basel provided the opposition for Sion in their last league game, but despite coming back from two goals down this five goal thriller went the way of the home side. Basel took the lead in the very first minute through Albian Ajeti and Frei added a second shortly before the half hour mark.

Uldriķis pulled a goal back for the visitors in the fortieth minute, but Basel lead at the break. Just eleven minutes of the second half had passed when Uldriķis completed Sion’s comeback with his second goal of the game, only for a seventy-first minute own goal from Andre Luis to hand all three points to Basel.

Grgic has been in good form for the visitors with three goals in the opening four matches of the season, while teammates Kasami and Uldriķis are both just one behind his tally as things stand. Abdellaoui has two assists to his name, but Sion will miss veteran Portuguese midfielder Carlitos if he fails to recover from his injury in time to face Grasshopper.

We’re confident that Sion have enough about them, even without Carlitos, to beat struggling Grasshopper this weekend, and have predicted a 2-0 win for the away side. The hosts have lost three of their last six matches, while Sion have won four of their last six in all competitions. The visitors have won two of the last three meetings between the two clubs, and were expecting another victory for Sion this Saturday.
