Is Holloway the man to get Grimsby firing?

Since Grimbsy Town appointed Ian Holloway after holding talks at a fish and chip restaurant in Cleethorpes, it has been a story of positivity for the Mariners. Holloway had been out of management since leaving QPR in May 2018 but the 56-year-old agreed to come back to the club and succeed Michael Jolley, who was sacked in November after a seven-game winless run.

The always entertaining manager has so far had a solid start to his time with the Mariners as, although they fell to defeat last time out against Crawley, they did finally manage to score more than once in a game and generally looked more of a threat in front of goal. With the club still far from safe from relegation, a higher goal output will be essential in them maintaining their spot in the Football League.

A resurgence on the cards?

Making the trip to Blundell Park is a Stevenage side who will be determined to earn three points in order to ease their own relegation fears. The visitors go into this match at the foot of the table having claimed just 22 points from their 29 matches so far. However, despite this poor points return, there has been a few signs of the green shoots of recovery in recent outings.

Stevenage may have only claimed one win in their last 13 league matches, but their dominant 4-0 victory over Cambridge proved that that they can compete, and although they fell to defeat last time out, they competed well with promotion chasing Plymouth Argyle. However, a lack of goals still remains a major concern and it is one which will need to be addressed if they are to retain their spot in the Football League.

Goals at a premium

Although both of these sides have demonstrated a decent improvement in recent weeks, they both know that there remains plenty of work to be done if they are to climb the table. The hosts have struggled to find the back of the net throughout the campaign and have failed to score in over half of their home matches. This, combined with the fact that Stevenage are the lowest scorers in the league with just 20 goals scored means that we think backing there to be less than 2.5 goals scored looks to be the way to go.

In terms of a correct score tip, we think that there will be little to separate the two sides. The hosts have scored an average of just 0.85 goals per game and when you factor in that their visitors have failed to score in 57% of their away matches and have average just 0.71 goals per game on the road, backing a 1-0 home win looks to be the smart move.
