A bridge too far for Hannover

This is a huge night for Hannover and their fans, as their 2.Bundesliga campaign is all but done and dusted as they sit in mid-table, their last forlorn hope of glory comes in the DFB Pokal, a tournament that they have won only once back in 1991/92

In fact, Hannover have reached this stage of the tournament on ten prior occasions, but failed to progress beyond it nine times.

Just two of Hannover’s nine prior defeats at this stage eclipsed a -1 handicap, with seven seeing just a single goal or even needing penalties. However, in Leipzig, they welcome a Champions League calibre opponent that has scored seven goals without reply in this season’s tournament.

Leipzig can show their class

Leipzig have now lost just one of their last six competitive away games, and that was a slender 3-2 loss to champions elect Bayern Munich, highlighting the quality of this RB outfit.

The visitors progressed past the quarter finals before losing in the final in both prior tournaments in which they made it this far, including a 2-0 win at this stage last season before a humbling 4-1 loss in the final against Dortmund.

Given the apparent gulf in class between the sides, I predict a Leipzig win at short odds. It is hard to make heads or tails of whether or not this will be a goal-fuelled affair so I am sticking with the short odds on the W-D-W market, while a 2-0 success could be a likely outcome.
