Tip Reasoning

The unpredictability of Eerste Divisie never ceases to amaze and match day 15 provided a collective shock as all of the top three failed to land a victory. Sparta Rotterdam were held to a second draw on the spin by Jong PSV and lost their 100% home record in the process, but it was enough for Henk Fraser’s side to grab a share of top spot with Den Bosch and Go Ahead Eagles after the latter suffered a home defeat to Oss. With their fellow co-leaders playing in the Monday fixtures this week, can Sparta apply the pressure when they take on Helmond Sport at Lavans Stadion?

A 0-0 stalemate was perhaps the least expected score line when Sparta Rotterdam hosted Jong PSV last Friday, but things never really got going for either team at Het Kasteel and a point apiece was a fair result in the end.

Sparta’s 100% home record had to end at some stage after a fantastic seven wins from seven in Rotterdam, and fans will have been satisfied with the Eerste Divisie picture at full time on match day 15 with Den Bosch held to a 1-1 draw at home to Cambuur and Go Ahead Eagles beaten 0-1 by Oss in Deventer.

It means all three sides are tied at the top of the league on 32 points heading into round 16, and Sparta will have the chance to grab the initiative in Helmond on Friday with Eagles and Den Bosch facing Monday road trips against Jong PSV and Jong Utrecht respectively.

It’s a chance they should take readily with hosts Sport rooted to the foot of Eerste Divisie, and anything other than a convincing victory will go down as a failure for the four time Dutch champions.

Sport are now 23 competitive fixtures without a win following last week’s 2-1 defeat at FC Eindhoven, and it’s highly unlikely that they’ll break the shackles before Christmas with games against Go Ahead and Oss coming up after Sparta’s visit to Lavans Stadion.

Confidence and morale probably can’t get any lower at the club after such a miserable campaign to date, and the only consolation for Sport is that there is no relegation to Tweede Divisie this season.

In terms of their home form, Sport have drawn three and lost five from their eight outings in Helmond this term, and they’ve conceded 16 goals at a rate of two per fixture.

Although Sparta’s attack lead by 13 goal man Lars Veldwijk has been kept relatively quiet over the past fortnight, they should hit their stride again here whilst they’re solid defence is unlikely to be troubled at the other end of the field. Sparta have kept an impressive eight clean sheets this season and will be disappointed if they concede against a Sport front line that’s netted at a rate of under one goal per game this term.

So the bet here for us is Sparta to win to nil and we’re recommending a three point stake. This is the perfect fixture for Henk Fraser’s men to get back on track after consecutive draws and they should grab the victory at a stroll with 0-2 our predicted score line.
