Reason For Hull City vs Wigan Predictions

Two sides at the wrong end of the Championship clash on Saturday with relegation fears hanging over this fixture. Hull City were talking up their chances of making the top six earlier this season, but they find themselves fifth-bottom following a poor start. Can they use this clash at the KCOM to pull away from danger?

The hosts were surprisingly clear of the drop last season after overperforming under Nigel Adkins. The Tigers did play beyond themselves to finish up in the middle of the pack, so a top-six challenge always seemed wildly ambitious talk from manager Grant McCann. However, he can utilise their good home record this season, starting with one of the most straightforward home games of the season.

Wigan head into this game in major trouble. They are stuck in the bottom three after six games, while the sides behind them can clearly improve. We aren’t so sure that Wigan can up their game, especially during a run of six games which have brought five defeats and a 0-0 draw at home to Barnsley.

The trouble for Wigan is their awful record on the road. Last season they claimed only 21% of their total points through results on the road. The Latics have failed to win 23 of their last 24 matches on their travels in this division, including a 2-1 defeat to Hull at the KCOM back in April.

That win was part of Hull’s strong finish, while it boosted their good run at home. The Tigers finished last season with 11 victories at the KCOM, while they were able to go unbeaten against the bottom nine, winning seven of those clashes. While Hull haven’t enjoyed the best run of late, they are capable of punishing poor sides here.

Wigan lost 16 times on the road last term, while they’ve added to that with three consecutive away defeats this season. We are backing them for more misery this weekend, with Hull set to return to form thanks to their solid record at home. A Hull win is our prediction with Wigan at rock bottom right now.

Wigan have had a major issue going forward in recent weeks, with just one goal scored in their last six. They haven’t been losing that heavily, having let in seven goals across their last five outings. However, they have shipped twice against Hull in three of the last four clashes between the two. With that in mind, we are looking at a 2-0 Hull victory as our correct score pick.
