Iceland vs Germany Predictions

Flick avoiding flak as Germans press on

Germany appear to be rediscovering their old form after a disappointing 2020-21 season that stretched from their 6-0 Nations League humiliation to Spain all the way through to Euro 2020 Finals exit at the hands of England.

After an uninspiring opening win over Liechtenstein, Hansi Flick got a good performance out of the Nationalelf in a 6-0 demolition of former group leaders Armenia on Saturday.

The Germans pressed the life out of their opponents and took almost every good chance they created and Flick will be looking for the same intensity against Iceland this week.

Whether he gets it or not, Germany should overcome Strakarnir okkar with ease.

Captain and long-throw exponent Aron Gunnarsson is not with the team currently and they do appear to have moved away from the style of football that took them to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals anyway.

That, and the lack of fresh talent coming in to replace the old guard, has seen Iceland become much easier to beat.

Arnar Vidarsson’s side were staring at a fourth straight home defeat before a late rally earned them a point against a lively North Macedonia side that dominated the 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Their opponents managed to muster 20 shots worth almost twice as many expected goals, so any optimism stemming from their late comeback should be tempered.

Germany can probably win this without hitting top gear, but if they do a wide-margin victory could ensue, so we will try to cover both eventualities with a -1 handicap bet and a 2-0 away win prediction.
