Lazio struggling to hit heights of last season

Lazio finished second in Serie A last season but they are way off the pace after 13 matches of this campaign which has seen them win just five times in the league.

Goals have been particularly hard to come by for the Romans who have scored just 14 times in their 13 league outings and a relatively low-scoring home win is the prediction when Cagliari roll into the Italian capital this Saturday.

Things have been even worse for the Sardinians who are a lowly 17th after taking just ten points from their opening 13 fixtures.

The Islanders have won just two of their 15 matches in all competitions this season, and their record against Lazio also makes for grim reading.

Cagliari haven’t beaten the capital giants in 16 attempts, a run stretching back to 1-0 Serie A success in 2013. That record is unlikely to improve this week and a cagey home win is the prediction.

Lazio have kept clean sheets in their last four matches on home soil so defending clearly isn’t much of an issue, but scoring goals is, so it is difficult to see them cutting loose this weekend.

One or both teams have failed to score in six of their last eight matches, and Maurizio Sarri’s men haven’t scored more than twice since a 3-2 win at home to Atalanta at the start of October.

So a narrow home victory is predicted at the Stadio Olimpico where a 2-0 win to Lazio looks the most likely outcome.
