Lazio vs Marseille Predictions

  • Lazio have won four of their five home games this season.
  • Marseille have failed to win their last three away games (two draws, one defeat).
  • Marseille have scored one goal in total in their last three away games.

Lazio shouldn’t take backwards step

Lazio enjoyed their best result under Maurizio Sarri when they overthrew Italian champions Inter at the Olimpico on Saturday and we don’t expect them to take a backwards step against Marseille.

I Biancocelesti have taken some time to get used to Sarri’s tactics and training methods, but there are definite signs that things are coming together – although the recent 3-0 loss at Bologna showed there may still be the odd bump in the road.

Even so, the underlying stats from that defeat suggest the scoreline was not a fair reflection of an even contest. Lazio’s results have been almost perfect in Rome with just the one draw among four home victories, including the derby.

So we feel justified in making them the selection for this pivotal Europa League Group E fixture between the clubs currently in second and third. Sarri’s side began with a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in a game decided by a calamitous goalkeeping blunder, but they totally outplayed Lokomotiv Moscow last time out to get three points on the board.

Le Classique on the horizon for visitors

Marseille have two points from two fairly uneventful draws in this competition and with attacking lynchpin Dimitri Payet an unused sub on their trip to Moscow, we can’t be sure they will be at full throttle for this – also because they take on PSG in Le Classique on Sunday.

Les Phocéens began the 2021-22 season in sparking form, but that has dropped off lately during a run of only one win in five matches. Jorge Sampaoli’s side are struggling to score goals on their travels with only one to show from their last three road trips.

The stats don’t point to a win to nil though because Sarri’s team have shipped six in five home games so far with only one clean sheet, so we will stick with the simple home win bet.

The recommendation of a 3-1 Lazio success in correct score betting comes from the hosts averaging 3.2 goals per game at home and conceding 1.2 per game at the Olimpico this season.
