Leganes vs Sporting Gijon Predictions

This is a massive game not just in terms of these two teams’ seasons but in the context of the whole relegation battle. The general consensus seems to be that Leganes are the only team not currently in the relegation zone that are in any danger of being sucked back into it. However, a win here would give them a huge 9 point cushion on the bottom three and the Madrid minnows would be looking good to beat the drop while the bottom three would all be in a perilous situation.

Neither of these sides come into this game in any sort of form. Leganes have won just 1 of their last 16 in all competitions while it’s just 1 win in 20 for Sporting Gijon. Between them they’ve won just 2 games in over 4 months of football so surely something has to give here. The bookies seem to be suggesting this could be relatively low-scoring but that’s not necessarily how this one will pan out.

You certainly couldn’t confidently back either side to keep a clean sheet. Leganes have conceded 1.67 goals per game on average this term while for Sporting Gijon that figure is 2.05. Both teams have scored in a huge 71% of Sporting Gijon’s games though which points to the fact that they do create a few chances. Both teams have found the net in 12 of their last 14 matches and even though they are away, the onus is on them to some extent here to try and win the game as a draw would still leave them well adrift.

They average just 0.27 points per game on their travels though so even though they might net, you wouldn’t be confident about their chances of winning the game. Leganes have a few of their better attacking players back from injury now and one of those is Alexander Szymanowski. He hit 12 goals from a wide position in the Segunda Division last term and started this season brightly with 3 goals before injury struck. He’s capable of causing problems here and backing Szymanowski to score anytime at 15/8 looks to be worth a flutter.

Overall, there should be chances in this for both sides with neither looking at all solid at the back and backing Both Teams to Score at 11/10 looks to offer value.
