Clermont Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Lens have failed to win six of their last eight home games and appear to be suffering a sort of crisis of confidence.  Meanwhile, Clermont have avoided defeat in two of their last three away matches amid an upturn in overall form.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

Clermont have drawn four of their last nine Ligue 1 games, including meetings with three of the current top-five. They should not fear a trip to Stade Bolaert-Delelis – where they were narrowly beaten 2-1 last season. But the Lanciers have scored only 19 goals in 29 games this season, so the likelihood is that any positive result for them will be low-scoring again. Lens drew their last home game 1-1 with struggling Le Havre and a similar outcome could be on the cards.

Lens look too shaky to back at the moment

Rock-bottom Clermont can provide stiff opposition for an out-of-form Lens side on Saturday.

Le Sang et Or’s Champions League chances have evaporated over the last few weeks and their prospects of playing in any European competition may come under threat if they fail to win at Stade Bolaert-Delelis.

Lens’s slump began with a surprise 3-1 home reverse to inconsistent Nice and continued with a defeat to Lille in the Derby du Nord. Franck Haise’s claimed their only point in the last month at home to fourth-bottom le Havre before going down 2-1 to second-bottom Metz last weekend.

Clermont can grind out a draw

Those results will only encourage a Clermont side that has taken five points in their last four matches. The Lanciers were second-best against Montpellier last weekend, but held on for a 1-1 draw.

That was the same scoreline that Pascal Gastien’s side had held a much-changed Paris Saint-Germain side to at the Parc des Princes eight days before.

They are a team that rely on set pieces and counter-attacks for a high percentage of their goals, but might just be able to create enough opportunities to nick a point against a Lens team suffering a minor crisis.
