Fenerbahce to Win

Reason for tip

Fenerbahce were unfortunate not to win the Turkish Super Lig last season and, with Jose Mourinho at the helm, they should kick on and claim a first-leg lead in Switzerland

Fenerbahce 3-1

Reason for tip

Lugano have scored at least twice in seven of their last nine league games and could make their mark, even though their Turkish opponents are likely to come out on top in an entertaining game

Lugano vs Fenerbahce Predictions

  • Fenerbahce were unbeaten in 19 league away games last season, winning 16 of them
  • They scored at least twice in 11 of their final 16 away league games last term
  • Lugano have scored at least twice in seven of their last nine home league games

Mourinho looking to take Fener to next level

The familiar face of Jose Mourinho will be in the Fenerbahce dugout at the start of this season and the Turkish side are hoping the managerial great will spur them on to glory this term.

They were unfortunate not to take the Turkish crown in the last campaign as they accumulated 99 points and still fell behind arch-rivals Galatasaray, while they will still be confident they can make inroads in European competition too.

They will expect to get the better of Swiss side Lugano in their first Champions League qualifier having fallen to the Conference League winners Olympiakos on penalties at the quarter-final stage, especially as their away record was superb.

Striker Edin Dzeko is in decent form after scoring a brace in a 5-1 friendly win over Championship Hull, and their superiority could tell against a team who finished six points behind Young Boys in the Swiss Super League last term.

Swiss side can still make their mark

Lugano lost ten league matches last season, but have scored at least twice in seven of their last nine on their own patch, including their 2-1 victory over Grasshoppers in their opening league game of the campaign.

So, despite Mourinho’s reputation for playing sometimes cautious football, we could see a few goals and a 3-1 away win could be of interest to correct-score punters.
