Maastricht vs Helmond Sport Predictions

MVV responded extremely well to consecutive defeats at Jong PSV last week, looking the better of the two teams at De Herdgang before being reduced to ten men midway through the second half. They still managed to cling on for a highly respectable 2-2 draw, and Ron Elsen’s team will seek to build on that result this Friday when they play host to a Helmond Sport side who are without a win in 15 on the road.

Indeed, Friday’s fixture at De Geusselt looks like a golden opportunity for MVV to regain the winning thread and deliver some joy for their home supporters.

Ron Elsen’s charges have been desperately disappointing in Maastricht this season, losing six of their ten home league games, and they were comprehensively outdone by Twente when last at De Geusselt a fortnight ago.

A return of eight points from ten home fixtures is simply not good enough for a team with Play-off aspirations once again this term, and MVV will have to turn that record around by the end of the campaign if they’re to achieve a top nine position.

They’re currently five points shy of where they want to be in 14th, but a victory over Sport here could see them rise as high as 10th come the end of round 22, depending on how the other teams around them fare.

That will put them in fairly healthy shape with winnable matches against Telstar, Oss and Jong Utrecht to come over the next few weeks, but they must first ensure they dispatch a Helmond Sport side who simply can’t buy a victory on the road.

Sport have now gone 15 away games without success in a run stretching back to last season, however they have earned encouraging 1-1 draws in their last two against Telstar and Oss.

With home victories gained against Sparta Rotterdam (3-0) and Jong Utrecht (2-0) since the end of November, Sport have clawed their way up to 17th having occupied bottom spot for a while, though further progress is unlikely with 10 points separating them from 16th placed Telstar.

So Sport clearly aren’t the pushovers that they were earlier in the campaign, but MVV should nonetheless get the job done at De Geusselt on Friday evening.

It’s rare to find a home odds-on shot worth supporting with a recent record as patchy as MVV’s, but they should have too much quality for Sport and their aforementioned draw at Jong PSV last week was gutsy, resilient and really encouraging.

This won’t be a classic by any means judging by October’s reverse fixture at Lavans Stadion which finished 1-1, but the hosts can win through for a crucial three points, with 2-0 our fancied correct score.
