We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.
Manchester City 2-1 @ 15/2

Reason For Manchester City vs Manchester United Predictions

  • Manchester City have seen both teams score in nine of their last 11 competitive home games.
  • Both teams have scored in four of the last five Manchester derbies.
  • Manchester City have scored 2.3 goals per game over their last 10 home matches, conceding 1.0 goals per game.
  • Manchester United have lost five of their last 10 away games in all competitions.

First leg triumph gives Manchester City breathing room

Pep Guardiola’s surprisingly strong squad selection in the first leg of this Carabao Cup tie has put them in a very favourable position heading back to the Etihad. They lead the tie 3-1 on aggregate, and they’re facing a Manchester United side ravaged by injury and facing scrutiny from all angles.

The hosts are under no such pressure, despite the fact that their Premier League trophy looks bound for Liverpool at the end of this season. They may be lagging behind in the title race, but they have still won eight of their last nine competitive matches and are among the favourites for all three cup competitions they are still involved in.

Manchester City’s home form isn’t to be overlooked either. They have won five of their last six at the Etihad, scoring 17 goals in the process. However, their last home defeat came against none other than their cross-city rivals, so Guardiola won’t be counting his chickens just yet.

Weekend FA Cup drubbing does little to abate Red Devils fans

Manchester United fans won’t be getting their hopes up though. They may have thrashed Tranmere in the FA Cup on Sunday, but the sour taste of a 2-0 home loss to Burnley last week will still be in their mouths. The Clarets’ shock victory is far from the only cause for concern, with an injury ravaged squad and a lack of activity in the transfer market causing a swathe of criticism.

Away from home the Red Devils have won just three of their last 10 competitive games, losing on five occasions and keeping just three clean sheets. That being said, they’re facing a Manchester City side that have conceded in nine of their last 11 home games in all competitions, so the visitors will get their chances up front.

3-1 deficit highlights Man Utd’s need to attack

Facing a 3-1 deficit, it’s imperative that Man Utd find some way to challenge the Manchester City defence, but they’re facing a side that have scored in all but one of their home games this season. A clean sheet looks almost an impossibility for Solskjaer’s men, so we think backing Both Teams to Score is a good opportunity.

In the end, a home win looks the most likely outcome. Even a weakened Manchester City side looks stronger than the squad available to Solskjaer, and with five defeats in their last 10 away games they’re hardly brimming with confidence. Man City have averaged 2.3 goals per game over their last 10 home outings, conceding an average of 1.0 goal per game in the process, making a 2-1 correct score prediction look a good choice.
