      Tip Reasoning

      • Mansfield conceded at least 1 goal in 80% of their home matches.
      • Mansfield have lost 53% of their home matches.
      • Carlisle conceded at least 1 goal in 93% of their away matches.
      • Carlisle have scored in 73% of their away matches.

      A season to forget

Expectations are always pretty high at Mansfield as they have one of the higher budgets in the division, they are not shy in the transfer market and they have ambitious owners who want to see the club play as high up the pyramid as possible. However, the owners will probably be the first to admit that things have not exactly gone to plan this season.

The Stags are currently just eight points above the bottom of the league, and although they go into this match having following a morale boosting 3-0 victory over promotion chasing Bradford last weekend, they have still lost four of their last five league matches. Things have not exactly gone to plan defensively and the hosts have the joint second worst defensive record in the division having conceded 48 times so far this season.

      Turning things around

Any Carlisle United fan will be able to tell you, it has not exactly been the season they were hoping for in League 2 and they go into this weekend’s clash more worried about the drop zone than they do about keeping pace with others for the top seven. However, Carlisle have been quick to act in the transfer window and have brought in Nick Anderton, Max Hunt, Joshua Kayode and Elliot Watt so far in January, along with securing the services of Aaron Hayden and Gethin Jones.

The early signs look good, as the Cumbrians have seemingly put an end to their slump and have managed two wins and a draw in their last three outings. Although they have been poor in front of goal in general this season,  there is also better news on that front as they have scored in seven in their last three matches. However, with no clean sheet in their last six matches, there is still plenty of work to be done.

Each side will fancy their chances

With both sides showing plenty of vulnerabilities at the moment, there is hope for each team that they will be able to claim the three points when they come together this weekend. The hosts concede frequently and although they are capable of putting in the odd good performance, these have been few and far between this season. Meanwhile, the visitors are looking much stronger of late and although the bookies clearly do not fancy them, the generous odds on offer means backing Carlisle to either draw or win on the double chance market looks to be an easy bet to make.

In terms of a correct score tip, we are going to go one better and back an away win. The visitors have improved in front of goal of late with seven goals in their last three outings, but they have also conceded in each of their last six. Meanwhile their hosts have an awful defensive record and have lost over half of their home matches. This leads us to believe that backing a 2-1 Carlisle win is the way to go.
