Melbourne City had a rather disappointing season last term, and will have been determined to put in a better showing this year after their cross city rivals lifted both the Hyundai A-League Premier and Champions trophies.

So far they are doing a sterling job of improving their fortunes. A few periods of excellent form have taken them to 3^rd in the A-League table, six points behind the top two but, crucially, ahead of Melbourne Victory on goal difference.

But the race in the top half of the table is very tight, and a defeat on Saturday could see them end the weekend down in 6^th place.

Melbourne City come into this match after suffering back to back defeats, but they have only lost three of their last 12 games. Six of these 12 games have ended in a full return of points for the hosts as well, and they haven’t lost three matches on the bounce since December 2013.

Melbourne Victory’s defence of their titles isn’t exactly going to plan. They sit in 4^th position in the A-League table and they have lost five of their last 11 league matches, with three wins and three draws making up the rest of their results.

This results in a tally of just 12 points from a possible 33 since the start of December, which explains why they are lagging behind the leaders despite their excellent start to the season.

This fixture has historically favoured the home side on the day. The hosts have won each of the last seven matches, with Melbourne Victory claiming a win four times and City taking the points the other three times.

This obviously gives an advantage to Melbourne City on Saturday, and odds of 4/6 for a Melbourne City Win or Draw Double Chance look excellent value to me. I’m going for a 2-1 win for the hosts at 10/1 for my correct score prediction as well.
