Melbourne City vs Western United Predictions

  • The starting match favourite failed to win each of the last four H2H meetings.
  • Melbourne could not beat Western United during the regular season (D1, L1).
  • This is Western United’s first shot at A-League glory in just their third season of existence!

Challenging the status quo

While Melbourne finished as the regular season champions for the second year running, boss Patrick Kisnorbo knows that he has his work cut out in trying to quell the rising power in Australian football that is fellow Melbourne club, Western United.

Kisnorbo’s Melbourne City failed to win each of the last four clashes with Western (D1, L3) while the often underestimated visitors won at odds upwards of 5/1 in two of the last four meetings! As such, you underestimate Western United at your peril.

The price is justified for Melbourne though as they were the best side during the regular season, finishing four points above Western. However, they played out draws in both legs of the semi-final and only qualifying via an extra time strike from the boot of top-scorer Jamie Maclaren.

A maiden success for Western?

Yet to win any major trophies since their 2019/20 introduction to the A-League, just – at least – 90 minutes stands between Western United and glory.

After losing the first-leg in the semi-final, Western proved that they will not bow down to their underdog status by defeating second-placed Melbourne Victory by a dominant 4-1 scoreline.

We are following the value in this clash with a double chance selection on a Western/Draw result, along with a smaller stakes selection on former Bundesliga and now Melbourne City man Matthew Leckie (G9) making it ten for the season.
