Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

These two sides like to keep things tight, with six of Middlesbrough’s last seven games featuring under 2.5 goals, while there have also been fewer than three goals in each of Sheffield United’s last nine games.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

Two evenly matched sides looking to bounce back from defeat last time out brings the draw into play and 1-1 appeals, given their last meeting at the Riverside was a score draw and both have already played out a 1-1 this season.

Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United Predictions

  • Six of Middlesbrough’s last seven games have featured under 2.5 goals
  • Under 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in each of Sheffield United’s last nine games
  • The Blades boasted the second-best defence in this season’s Championship heading into the midweek fixtures

Tight Riverside battle expected

Middlesbrough will be aiming to end a two-game losing streak when they take on Sheffield United, who were beaten in the Championship for the first time this season by Leeds last time out.

Boro failed to net in their most recent fixture against Bristol City and their matches have tended to be low-scoring this season, as in their 10 league games to date they have scored 10 and conceded only nine.

Six of Boro’s last seven matches have also featured fewer than three goals and it has been a similar story for Sheffield United, whose last nine fixtures have gone under the 2.5 goal mark.

Only Burnley boasted a better Championship defence than the Blades heading into the midweek round of fixtures and this clash at the Riverside is unlikely to produce more than a couple of goals.

Difficult to split rivals

Boro may have lost their last two games, but their defeat to Bristol City last time out was their first home setback in the league this season.

Michael Carrick will expect a response from his side on Wednesday and Boro did take four points off Sheffield United when the teams last locked horns during the 2022/23 campaign.

The Blades have not won away to Boro since October 1997, but they are in better form than their hosts, despite their defeat to Leeds last time out, and are capable of leaving the Riverside with a share of the spoils.

Both sides have been involved in 1-1 draws this season, Boro at home to Preston and Sheffield United at Norwich, so do not be surprised if that is the final scoreline on Wednesday.
