      Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

It will have been a good Christmas for Sheffield Wednesday fans after convincing back-to-back home wins against Wolves and Birmingham ended their mini slump in form. The results leave them only one place and one point outside the play-off positions and they are right in contention at the midway point in the season.

They’ve not been great on the road of late though with only 2 points coming from their last 4 matches away from Hillsborough in the league. There is nowhere tougher to go than the Riverside in this division and although they’ll approach the game with confidence following their 3-0 Boxing Day win, they will know it’s going to be a big ask to get anything from the game.

Boro’s last game was a 3-0 win at previously unbeaten Brighton and it sent out a real message to the division that Middlesbrough are the side to beat. They are a point behind Derby at the top but have a game in hand and have won 8 of their last 10 in the league.

They’ve not conceded a goal in any of their last 6 matches and have only conceded twice at home all season, the last of which was over 3 months ago. They are better going forward this season too and are only 3 goals behind the league’s top scorers so they very much look like the real deal at both ends.

If that’s not enough reason to believe a home win is likely here, it’s certainly worth noting the postponement of Middlesbrough’s game at Blackburn on Boxing Day is another big plus for the hosts when it comes to this one and they should have the fresher legs given this is Wednesday’s 2nd match in 3 days. Therefore consider backing Middlesbrough to win again at 4/6.

Although Wednesday have been in the goals at home, they haven’t been as convincing away and it’s hard to see them penetrating Middlesbrough’s excellent defence much here. Therefore consider backing a solid 2-0 home win at 6/1.
