MK Dons vs Northampton Predictions
The original clash ended in a 2-2 draw at Sixfields 10 days ago with Ricky Holmes scoring twice for the League Two club but Nicky Maynard grabbing a late leveller for MK Dons to take the tie to a replay.
Since then MK Dons have lost 5-0 at home to Burnley but bounced back immediately with a much improved defensive performance in their 1-0 win over Reading on Saturday so it is hard to know what to make of their form.
Northampton Town are much easier to read in that they just keep on winning in League Two. Since holding MK Dons they’ve won twice in the league, both by 2-1 margins away from home at Plymouth and Dagenham so they will come here with the confidence of a side that is playing well and not used to losing matches.
Since the start of November they have won 11 of their 13 matches in all competitions and have won all six away games in that period including a shock 2-1 win at Coventry in the 1st Round so they will believe they can pull off another surprise here at Championship strugglers MK Dons and they will certainly come with a positive attitude.
There have been at least 2 goals in all of Northampton’s last 15 away games and at least 3 in all of their last 8 on the road. Against lower league opponents, MK Dons are likely to play with a bit more freedom than they have been doing in the Championship, perhaps more reminiscent of their cavalier approach to League One last season when they scored goals for fun.
Therefore there is plenty of reason to back there to be over 2.5 goals in this game at 4/5.
Northampton are having an excellent season and will be the more confident of the two sides and they are clearly just as happy on the road as they are at Sixfields. Therefore a repeat of the scoreline from the first game would be no surprise and backing another 2-2 draw might be worth a punt at 12/1.
