Monaco vs Manchester City Predictions
- Monaco picked up nine points at home in the league phase last season.
- Monaco have a perfect home record in Ligue 1.
- City have failed to win two of their three Premier League away games.
Underdogs Monaco can frustrate City
Manchester City kicked off their bid for Champions League glory with a 2-0 win over Napoli at home but they may struggle to back that up with another win at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday.
Monaco’s own European bid began in disappointing fashion as they were thumped 4-1 at Club Brugge, but the Ligue 1 club are a far stronger side at home and can get a result against the 2023 winners.
Backing both teams to score at around 4/6 is one option here as there have been goals at both ends in each of Monaco’s last five games and in all three of their home games this season, but the bigger price of 13/8 on either a home win or a draw looks worth the risk.
City yet to click on the road
City thrashed Burnley 5-1 in the Premier League on Saturday but their results on the road have been less impressive.
Pep Guardiola’s side won 4-0 at Wolves in their first away assignment of the season but have since picked up just one point from two away games, at Brighton and Arsenal, and they face a Monaco side with a strong home record.
The 2004 runners-up have a perfect record of three wins from as many games at the Stade Louis II and they are on a nine-game unbeaten run at home across all competitions.
Monaco claimed nine points from three home games in the league phase of this competition last season, including a win over Barcelona, and they also beat Aston Villa at this venue during the knockout stages. Benfica were the only team who managed to win at Monaco in the Champions League last season, a feat they managed twice as they won in France in the league phase and in the last 32.
City come into the game as clear favourites but Monaco look capable of at least avoiding a defeat.
High scoring game predicted
A 2-2 draw has a chance in the correct score market as both of these teams are in fine form in front of goal. Over 3.5 goals has landed in all of Monaco’s home games this season and they have scored 12 goals in total across their last five games, while City have scored at least twice in four of their last five games.
Erling Haaland scored twice late on in City’s win over Burnley to continue his scoring streak. The Norwegian has now netted in seven successive games for club and country – hitting an incredible 13 goals during that run – and he is the obvious choice for an anytime goal on Wednesday.
