Monaco vs St Etienne Predictions
- Monaco have kept most of the squad that finished second last season together this summer
- St Etienne lost some key players of their promotion-winning squad
- Monaco beat Barcelona 3-0 in their most recent friendly while Les Verts lost 1-0 to Getafe
Monaco can kick off campaign with a win
A Monaco win should be on the cards when the principality club kick off their Ligue 1 campaign with a home date against promoted St Etienne on Saturday evening.
Adi Hutter’s side are coming off an impressive 3-0 warm-up win over Barcelona and appear ready to hit the ground running as they attempt to mount a stronger challenge to Paris Saint-Germain this term.
Monaco will hope the departure of Kylian Mbappe from the PSG ranks could make up the nine-point difference between the clubs from last season, although they have also said goodbye to a reliable goalscorer in Wissam Ben Yedder. Hutter’s forward options still look pretty tasty by Ligue 1 standards, however, with Swiss international Breel Embolo and ex-Arsenal starlet Falorin Balogun supported by the likes of Takumi Minamino and new signing George Ilenikhena.
Les Verts may struggle to score at Stade Louis II
St Etienne lost attacker Irvin Cardona, who scored in both of their end-of-season play-off wins, and goalscoring midfielder Dylan Chambost in the summer and their replacements have yet to fire in pre-season.
A recent 1-0 reverse to Getafe was followed by a 3-2 win over Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel, albeit the match was played over 120 minutes.
Les Verts may struggle at the top end of the pitch at this level and the pick here is for them to draw a blank in a defeat to a Monaco side that kept eight home clean sheets last season. Les Monagasques conceded only once in their final four home games of last season, all of which were wins, which seems like a good basis for a bet here.
