Monaco vs Valencia Predictions
The first leg at the Mestalla last week saw the Spanish side run out 3-1 winners. The most crucial goal came in the 86th minute when Sofiane Feghouli netted a 3rd for Valencia to provide them with a 2 goal cushion to take to the French principality.
It may just have entirely changed the approach Nuno Espírito Santo will employ here. At 2-1 he would have probably been more positive and looked for an away goal to cancel out the one Mario Pasalic scored for Monaco in Spain last week. However with a 3-1 advantage he may opt to park the bus and trust his defense to see the club through into the group stage.
Valencia may have lost Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester City but are still quite strong at the back and defended well to claim a 0-0 draw at Rayo Vallecano in their La Liga opener on Saturday. They had the 3rd best defense in the Spanish top flight last season and will be confident they can progress here.
Therefore this is highly unlikely to be a goalfest. In all five of Monaco’s Champions League home games last season, there were 2 or less goals and you have to go back to 2005 for the last time both teams scored in a Champions League match at Stade Louis II.
At 21/20 you have to fancy there again being 2 or fewer goals in the game on Tuesday and both teams not to score.
To further back that bet up, Monaco haven’t been particularly impressive going forward this season and may struggle to break down a solid Valencia side.
6 of their last 13 home games have ended in 0-0 draws so surely Valencia will look at that and think they can repeat what many sides have clearly managed to do and nullify Monaco’s attacking threat here to secure a draw and a safe passage into the lucrative group phase.
Odds of 8/1 for this game to finish goalless therefore serves up exceptional value.
