Lazio took advantage of a series of slip-ups from Serie A’s other leading lights to seize control of the battle for a top-four finish before the international break, going second in the league – and five points clear of fifth-placed Roma – by beating their local rivals 1-0 in a bad-tempered derby last time out. Having exited the Coppa Italia and the Europa Conference League, Maurizio Sarri’s men now look to have an excellent chance of securing Champions League football, and their run-in begins with a trip to Monza on Sunday.

Lazio have gone five games unbeaten in Serie A after overcoming Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, winning four of those contests. Even more impressively, the Biancocelesti have gone five league matches without conceding, and only runaway leaders Napoli (16) have shipped fewer than their 19 goals against in 27 Serie A outings this term. Sarri’s side have not allowed any of their last five Serie A opponents to create even one expected goal, and their newfound solid streak may make them favourites to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition.

While Monza have gone three games without losing, drawing their last two against strugglers Cremonese and Verona, their momentum has dissipated somewhat following a strong run after the turn of the year. Raffaele Palladino’s men have only won one of their last five matches, while they lost November’s return fixture against the Biancocelesti, going down 1-0 on home soil. Monza have taken just one point from seven meetings with top-six opponents this term, and they look unlikely to cause a shock on Sunday.

Lazio’s top-four charge to continue
