Motherwell vs Hamilton Predictions

  • Under 2.5 goals were scored in three of Motherwell’s first four games of the season.
  • Hamilton scored just one goal in their first three matches of the new campaign.
  • Hamilton lost each of their first three assignments of the 2020/21 season.

Motherwell slow out of the blocks

After their fine 2019/20 campaign and 3rd place Scottish Premiership finish, Motherwell entered in the new season with plenty of optimism, however a sluggish start to their latest domestic adventure quickly tempered expectations.

The Well limped out of the blocks with successive 1-0 defeats to Ross County and Dundee United, and while back-to-back draws since against Livingston (2-2) and Hibernian (0-0) were an improvement, the teams lack of attacking thrust will be of huge concern to manager Stephen Robinson.

Hamilton rooted to the foot of the table

Hamilton Academical – who avoided the drop by the skin of their teeth last term – are one of only two clubs to have scored fewer goals than Motherwell so far this season after a dismal opening salvo.

The Accies were hammered 5-1 at Celtic on the opening day of the campaign, and subsequently slipped to two 1-0 defeats on the spin against Ross County and St. Mirren.

Hamilton have averaged just 9.3 attempts per game in the Scottish Premiership since the new season kicked-off – which is the joint lowest figure in the division so far, when you remove COVID-hit Aberdeen from the equation.

With front pair David Templeton and David Moyo lacking chemistry, Hamilton look desperately low on fire-power, and we expect that to be reflected in the final score on Saturday.

Few goals anticipated

Motherwell’s skirmish with Hamilton this weekend has all the makings of a low-scoring encounter, making the under 2.5 goals market worth considering for the clash.

The Well failed to register in three of their first four games of the new campaign, while Hamilton notched just once in total in their first three assignments during the same period.

Defensively, the fact that both clubs have fallen to two 1-0 defeats each suggests that while final third sparkle is lacking, the sides are capable of restricting the flow of chances at the opposite end.

As a result, under 2.5 goals were registered in three of Motherwell’s first four and two of Hamilton’s first three Premiership matches respectively, and we recommend taking advantage of that pattern when the teams meet on Saturday.

Our correct score prediction backs Motherwell to eventually carve out a 1-0 victory however. The Well showed signs of life in each of their last two games, in draws against Livingston and Hibernian, and they wield sufficient quality to squeeze past the division’s bottom club.
