Nancy vs Guingamp Predictions

Guingamp come into this match off the back of a harrowing 9-0 thrashing at the hands of, you guessed it, PSG. Guingamp were absolutely torn limb from limb in this game with Cavani and Mbappé bagging hat tricks. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side offered nothing going forward and even less going backwards. This result has reduced their goal difference to -29 but even more disappointingly, this put a firm end to what was turning into a good run for Guingamp. 

They had won four of the six matches leading up to the game but Guingamp will be pretty broken after that type of result. They conceded 12 shots on target and could only reply with two, which didn’t threaten Buffon’s goal. Before this game, Guingamp had improved in many departments with a win against Rennes (2-1) showing real grit but also attacking flair. This heavy defeat may set them back though with their confidence being well and truly shot. However, they come up against a side also short of self-belief, in Nancy. 

Les Chardons currently sit bottom of Ligue 2 with just three wins from 20 games but, like Guingamp, they have also shown signs of progress in recent weeks, despite two consecutive defeats. Nancy’s last two games were against 5th placed Paris and 3rd placed Lens but they managed to really put the pressure on with two battling performances. They kept 47% of the possession against Paris and 45% against Lens and really could have won either of the matches. They were unfortunate to come up against some of the best teams in the league but they should take heart from these performances and take it into this match against Guingamp.

For a team bottom of the league, Nancy have been consistently delivering goals, with twelve goals in their last ten, they haven’t drawn a blank since the start of November. Their defence has also been reasonable with four clean sheets in their last nine games but will this be enough to hold back the Ligue 1 opposition?

This will be an interesting match as it sees two teams in similar veins of form come together, albeit in different divisions. These teams have faced off twice in the last few years with Guingamp winning both of those clashes (1-0 in 2017, 2-0 in 2016). Nancy have a pretty poor home record ahead of this game with five losses in their last eight at the Stade Marcel-Picot. Conversely, Guingamp have won three of their last four on the road and we feel the Ligue 1 outfit will flex their muscles in this game. Despite the Paris loss, they have been very solid with their play and while they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five games, we’re still backing them to win 2-1.
