Both sides bidding to build on good starts

Netherlands and Ecuador both kicked off their World Cup bids with 2-0 victories and a win for either side would probably be enough to secure a knockout spot with a game to spare.

The Dutch looked laboured at times against Senegal but still came out on top courtesy of two late goals.

Ecuador overcame host nation Qatar with relative ease, and never really had to get out of first gear as they recorded a comfortable win.

Goals could be at a premium

Both of these sides have strong defensive records as the Dutch head into the game seeking a fourth successive clean sheet, while Ecuador haven’t conceded since a 1-1 draw with Argentina in March – a run stretching seven games.

The Netherlands left it late against Senegal as the first of their two goals came in the 84th minute, and this Ecuadorian defence has shown real resolve over the course of the last few months.

The Dutch struggled to create against the AFCON holders until Memphis Depay’s introduction and as he is still lacking fitness he may be limited to a substitute role once again. With Depay not at full strength, the Oranje attack does look a little lightweight and Ecuador may be able to hold out so a 0-0 draw looks to have a chance in the correct score market.
