Newport County vs Blackburn Rovers Predictions
Warren Feeney was appointed as the new manager of League Two side Newport County on Friday replacing John Sheridan who left to join Oldham. It was a good start for the Northern Irishman too as his new troops won 1-0 at York City in the league, which was a much needed boost heading into this re-arranged 3rd round tie against last year’s FA Cup Quarter-Finalists Blackburn.
Newport though are struggling in League Two and Football League survival remains their ultimate goal this season. They hadn’t won in 4 prior to the York game but those 3 points have moved them up to 20th place and they are 6 points clear of the relegation zone.
Blackburn have been struggling badly for goals and points of late in the Championship and Paul Lambert is without a win in 6 matches after making a good start to life at Ewood Park. They were beaten 1-0 at home by Brighton on Saturday and have only scored 1 goal in those last 6 matches.
Their extra class and experience should be telling here though not to mention their ability to bring in some fresh legs given this is the 2nd game in the space of 48 hours for both these clubs. They have good memories from this competition this year when they made the last eight and took Liverpool to a replay and with any top six hopes all but over in the league, they’ll have no reason not to take it seriously.
Although an FA Cup tie is a unique occasion and a bit more unpredictable, it is worth noting that Newport County have only won 3 of their last 25 home games in a run stretching back over a year and one of those victories was against non-league Brackley Town in the FA Cup 1st Round. Blackburn will be the toughest opponents they’ve faced on home soil and should have enough to get the job done on the night and Rovers are available at 3/4 to win the game.
The Lancashire club are clearly not firing in the final third but they have only conceded 8 goals in 10 matches under Lambert and should be able to shut the Exiles out so consider backing a 2-0 away win at 13/2.
